Please finish your spreadsheet, come on
I need to know how many of you have Mac / PC
This blog will be evolving all along, dirty list for today, let me tweak it, this is a new class, thank you. PG
Link to the main file we've worked on since the start of the class: BP_FundamentalsClasses:
https://epicgames.box.com/s/zz9ydnf9bfgdhk771w6z1ss5ldit2dzp
CLASS:
• 2 people on 1 computer
• The game engine: world building, program anything for anything
Actors, Gravity, light, physics, Animation, installations, VR, simulation
Just accept the video games legacy terms and you’ll be OK
• Unreal Academy https://academy.unrealengine.com
please take a look at the sections that attract you, we'll need to talk about them in class
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS to keep your sanity:
• 3 hours of work weekly will insure you gain your independence in Digital Making at the end of this class
• Use a mouse
• The Launcher - Library etc... MUST name your projects properly! Versioning
• Macs consider installing Windows Bootcamp - 100go
• Where it is on your Mac / PC - make shortcut when you get a chance
• Unreal projects are huge so: put them on a large and fast drive
• No save-as, must duplicate your project
• Versioning - Setup Desktop Google Drive or Dropbox will save your life (BUT as we found out in class, network is an issue so we'll talk again).
- put your files that you are working on on your Desktop Google Drive folder in a special new folder of your own
- Don't sync your Desktop Google Drive folder to my Weekly class folders
• Disable Autosave on your Unreal projects (ask me where next week)
• 2nd screen or large screen is a recommendation at home
• When you work on a sample project, you can open a sample project and open your own = 2 projects at the same time are great to compare
• No one out there knows the game engine fully, it’s just too big, get used to these things:
- Ignore most of everything around you, focus on the specific buttons, checkboxes eat…
- Steal as much as you like, there are so many sample files out there
- Compiling shaders > ??
- 45% >??
• Unreal store
• YouTube can be as great as complicated - compare sources!
• Diff between Unity and Unreal: Unity depends on plugins form its asset store, Unreal has it all in
• Open Unreal Academy https://academy.unrealengine.com / Browse classes
• Understand the Project Folder: the Project File is inside
• Open “Blueprints” project in "_Wk2" in the Google Drive share / go into the project folder and 2ble-click on “Blueprints.uproject”
• Unreal UI
- world Outliner
- Content Browser
- make icons smaller in the Content Browser
- expand side Browse menu
- filters
- Level = Map
- Player Start
- Details Panel
- F
• Blueprints = Objects with behavior
- What’s a Template? What's an Instance?
- Components = parts
- Actors
• When starting a new project, don't add "Starter Content" unless you have lots of space or know what you need in there
• For the students who are going into CAD:
only PCs can use the Datasmith 3D / not Macs
- Subscribe to Unreal Studio
- Install the Datasmith plugin which will fix your import problems for Sketchup, Rhino and most others right away
ASSIGNMENT:
Assignment for Week 3: 3hours - no mark, but if you don’t do it, you’re pretty much in trouble next class because you may not understand what we're doing.
Please go through the full tutorial videos 1 to 5
https://academy.unrealengine.com/Class-Viewer/blueprint-essential-concepts after opening the file below:
(BTW you don't have to listen to the programming comments too much.)
• Open the file that we already have opened in class named: “BP_FundamentalsClasses”
load will take time (-45%>??)
• You should see a black screen, select "Content" in the Content Browser
• click on filters and check "Level"
• type in "Blue"
• 2ble-click on the Level named: "Blueprint_EssentialConcepts_Start"
Now you can follow the tutorial mentioned above :)
Also don't forget to browse the themes in here: https://academy.unrealengine.com
See you next week, PG
